Enriching Buildings, People & Communities
Scope of
Works
Glossop Town Hall and Municipal buildings are a group of linked civic buildings located in the heart of historic Glossop. The Town Hall, constructed in 1838 is Grade II listed and is an important part of the architectural heritage of the town.
In 2022 the council provided a significant multi-million investment into the redevelopment of the Town Hall and Municipal Buildings. As part of this refurbishment, the building's sash windows and clock tower needed attention to elegantly reinstate its architectural significance.
After a competitive public procurement tender process, Hankinson Whittle were selected to complete the refurbishment due to our unique offering of specific heritage and listed building experience and expertise.
"Fantastic delivery of the project with continuous communication throughout. We are extremely satisfied with the service we received.” (Mark Walster - Contracts Manager)
The Council wanted to ensure that we preserved the traditional style and beauty of the windows of the Town Hall and Municipal building, using only premium materials for the refurbishment of the 35 Sliding Sash Windows and 4 Casement Windows. The internal and external frames were carefully prepared, repaired and painted in-situ with the fitting of new sash cords, pulleys, sash lifts and draft-proof strips to finalise the restored look.
To halt the further deterioration of the clock tower, working closely with High Peak Borough Council, we completed the following restoration works:
-
Careful removal of the timber clock surround to be refurbished and reinstated.
-
New lead lining to the cornice of the tower turret.
-
Preprint preparation and painting of Clock Facework,
turret, timber and cornices with appropriate historic
paint schemes.
-
Removal and replacement of bird control netting.
-
Refurbishment and replacement of box gutter and
modification of leadwork.
Challenges & Key Facts
The Clock Tower had been inhabited by nesting birds and, with the possibility of remnants, it was necessary to clean the areas prior to works taking place.
The site has to remain fully occupied to the public and building users throughout works, with careful care and consideration made to safe access and security.
The clock was temporarily stopped at midday for the duration of the works.
The same Site Manager completed the full supervision and coordination throughout the works.
