Scope of
Works

The National Trust play a critical role in caring for their special places and will only with suppliers who share their values and best business practices. Hankinson Whittle has played a crucial role in supporting their values for over eight years with a long-term relationship.

One of the many projects we have worked on has included Lyme Park Timber Yard Refurbishment.

Lyme Park is a large estate south of Disley, Cheshire and is home to a mansion house surrounded by formal gardens and a deer park in the Peak District National Park. The house is the largest in Cheshire and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Within the grounds stands the Timber Yard, which houses the National Trust shop, a private tenanted house, tea room, a workshop and public toilets, which required refurbishment.

As trusted contractors to National trust we completed:

  • Full inspection and survey of timber surfaces and existing paintwork for rot, damage or deterioration and quality of the existing paintwork.

  • Full pre-paint repair survey of timber surfaces for any rot, damage or deterioration.

  • Identification of any gaps or cracks that need filling.

  • Replacement gutters and missing downspouts.

  • Evaluation of the quality of any existing paintwork.

  • Preparation of surfaces, including sanding and cleaning, to ensure proper adhesion of new paint.

  • Application of high-quality, weather-resistant paint to timber surfaces.

Site Access
& Egress

Hankinson Whittle personnel prioritised the maintenance of safe entry and exit points for themselves and other contractors in their working area. We also uphold high standards of cleanliness and organisation.

As the principal contractor, Hankinson Whittle took responsibility for ensuring safe access and egress. We designate and marked out access routes and use barriers as needed.

Preparation,
Scaffold & Cherry Picker

Preparation included:

  • Load all equipment required for job.

  • Carry out vehicle safety checks.

  • Transport equipment and installers to site.

  • Report to site office and receive permit to work (where required),

  • Put on personal protective equipment.

  • Inform all other persons in area of start of works.

  • Cordon off work area if practical and necessary to do so.

  • Ensure the area to be worked and exit points are clear of obstruction.

  • Ensure that safe access and egress is maintained.

Our approved contractor provided and erected the scaffold where needed. The Site Foreman ensured a handover certificate was received before granting access. Ladders were used to access the scaffold, and they would be secured and removed or boarded off at the end of each shift to prevent unauthorised access.

When carrying out pre-paint repairs and painting high-level dormer windows and chimney stacks, a cherry picker was utilised to provide safe and secure access for our operatives. This enabled them to access these areas more efficiently and effectively, allowing them to complete the work in a timely manner. The use of a cherry picker also ensured that our operatives were working from a stable and secure platform, which minimised the risk of accidents or falls.
