At Hankinson Whittle, we believe that investing in people is fundamental to the future of our business and the wider construction industry. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on some of the incredible individuals helping to shape that future.
Apprenticeship Week offers an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young professionals taking their first steps into the industry, and to highlight the critical role apprenticeships play in addressing long-term skills gaps.
Jack Fielder is an apprentice Quantity Surveyor supporting our South division. He works across the commercial aspects of our projects and is involved in everything from contacting subcontractors and suppliers to measuring works on site and maintaining client relationships.
Jack said he enjoys the variety in his role, especially working on-site and learning directly from experienced team members. He shared, “I think working with the team, we’ve got a great team down South, but also a great group at head office that we work closely with. I’m really happy working at Hankinson Whittle. It’s a brilliant, brilliant company.”
Miriam Mahmood, known as Maz, is a painting and decorating apprentice currently working on the restoration of the Grade I listed Manchester Town Hall. She’s involved in the detailed preparation of historic interiors, helping to clean, sand, and restore the walls and ceilings in the building’s iconic state rooms.
Maz explained, “I’ve been learning and helping out so much. I do lots of work on the ceilings and walls like cleaning and prep for the state rooms. Obviously after years and years of them not being touched, grime has built up, so we use tiny sponges and specialist solutions to clean every inch by hand.” She added that her creative side is well suited to this kind of detailed work and described how inspired she was by the surroundings, saying, “When I walked into this building for the first time I thought, just wow, the beauty just took me away. Really and truly I’m just amazed to be a part of it.”
At Hankinson Whittle, we understand how vital it is to support the next generation of professionals, and we’re committed to welcoming new apprentices across a wide range of trades and disciplines. With the industry facing ongoing skills shortages, developing young talent is central to our long-term growth and sustainability. It’s also incredibly rewarding to watch individuals grow within our teams, gaining experience and confidence with every project.
This week and every week, we celebrate the impact of our apprentices and the experienced teams that support their journey.
