The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester is Europe's largest single-site cancer centre that treats over 600,000 patients a year.

2020 was a year like no other; the COVID-19 Pandemic affected everything we did. Hospitals and cancer units across the UK struggled with the surge in COVID-19. The Christie Hospital had to adapt quickly to deliver lifesaving cancer care to their most vulnerable patients.

To be able to keep patients and staff safe with minimal impact or disruption to patient care, the Christie Hospital required urgent refurbishment of its entire top floor into a COVID ward.

Vinci Integrated Health Projects (IHP) approached us to complete the preprint repairs and internal decoration. The work to be completed would typically be programmed to run over 46 weeks, however, we were faced with a seemingly impossible task to complete this in 12 weeks.

It was a true testament to our management and delivery teams who successfully coordinated resources to provide an agile and flexible approach.

We provided 24-hour delivery in rotating day and night shifts, to meet the urgent deadline without impacting the works of other site trades.

While there was an urgent demand to complete the works in a short time frame, our priority was to keep operatives safe while the UK faced a public health emergency.

We had to ensure that we took all the necessary steps to keep everyone safe and well. Risk assessments and site operating procedures were frequently updated and communicated and we successfully achieved zero recordings of COVID throughout the 12-week programme.

The project could have faced many delays and challenges, but it was thanks to the agile and flexible approach we brought to the project that The Christie NHS Trust had a completed ward within a 12-week timescale and could continue to provide vital care to its patients.
